"HISTORY"
History has shown that there has been human settlement in the area of Ukraine from 4500 to 3000 BC by the late neolithic Trypillian culture. From 700 to 200 BC Iranian nomads called Scythians occupied the land. During the 3rd Century, the Goths arrived and sometime during their reign they defeated the Roman Empire. At the beginning of the 7th Century, the Bulgars took over this country, but by the end of the century due to their migration across this vast land they were over taken by a nomadic Jewish Turk people called "The Khazars." During the 10th and 11th centuries Ukraine was the largest and most powerful state in Europe and had became the first Slavic State laying the foundation for the nationality of Ukraine and Eastern Europe throughout subsequent centuries. The Mongol's invaded Ukraine which weakened this very powerful state in the 12th century. During the 1300-1600's this land and people were over taken and ruled by the Poles and Lithuanians. In the late 1600's they fled from the Poles and were invaded by the Cossack's and by the late 1800's they were absorbed into Imperial Russia. During the brutal Soviet rule in the early 1900's over 8 million Ukrainians lost their lives due to a famine. During WWI Ukrainians that were Russian sympathizers were thrown in concentration camps by the Austro-Hungarian authorities. This resulted in approximately 20 thousands deaths. Then during WWII, German and Soviet armies were responsible for some 7 to 8 million more deaths of Ukrainians. Then with the dissolution of the USSR in 1991, Ukraine final achieved independence, however democracy has remained elusive as the legacy of state control and endemic corruption has stalled efforts at economic reform, privatization, and other civil liberties.
